Leuven Bears moving upwards.

It’s been a long time coming for the Leuven Bears.

After dangling at the bottom of the standings for the past 6 seasons the Bears are finally looking like they will reach the playoffs again. Currently sitting comfortably in 5th place in the league with their 7-6 record they are being carried by their US players Hugh Robertson, Brandan Stith and Josh Heath, while the talented youngsters like Seppe D’espallier, Tim Lambrecht, Luka Kotrulja and Joris Fauconnier continue to leap ahead in their development. Add to that sharpshooter Jonas Delalieux, the hard working Donovon Jack and newcomer B.J. Stith and you get a really solid looking, strong cohesive unit.

In his second full season with the Bears Eddy Casteels and his assistant Jill Lorent have clearly brought continuity and a fighting mentality to the club and its players. And things aren’t about to change any time soon as they’ve recently extended the contracts of their big trio Robertson, Br. Stith & Heath, while D’espallier, Kotrulja and Fauconnier are also still under contract for next season.

It’s all clearly starting to pay off on the court as well.

Since December 2019 the Leuven Bears have started racking in the wins and have launched their ascension to the upper echelons of the EuroMillions Basketball League standings. With 5 wins in their last 6 games – including Charleroi (twice) and Mons – the Bears seem to be reaching cruising speed and have clearly become a very tough opponent for any team to handle.

Everyone loves a good underdog story… and for my part I wouldn’t mind seeing the Leuven Bears writing their own version of it this season.
