Spirou bolster line-up with Dutch international

When Adama Darboe broke his contract with Spirou Charleroi before the season started it was already announced that they would start a search for a replacement.

It was widely expected that this replacement would be another guard, but with the youngsters holding their own – especially Milan Samardzic – Charleroi has now gone on a different route and have instead acquired a versatile Dutch international, Shane Hammink.

Coming from a basketball family (his dad Geert Hammink spent 4 seasons in the NBA), Shane did part of his growing up in the States and spent 2 years at LSU (NCAA) and got his first minutes with the Dutch National Team in 2014. After his 2 seasons at LSU he then transferred to Valparaiso (NCAA) where he graduated in 2017.

After graduation he started his professional career in Spain with Bilbao where he teamed-up with the current Sports Director of Charleroi: Axel Hervelle. The following 2 seasons Hammink returned to The Netherlands as he signed with Donar Groningen where he played in the FIBA Europe Cup and in his second season averaged solid numbers with 10.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.4 apg & 1.2 spg.

This current season he started out with the newly formed team in the DBL: Gelderland, where he was averaging 17.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 7.5 apg & 2.5 spg in the 2 games they played before the season was halted due to the coronavirus. Thanks to a clause in his contract Hammink was allowed to leave Gelderland if a team from abroad would come knocking and so he will now finish out the season with Charleroi, adding some much needed experience and versatility to the squad.
